Another Skin

Making collars for football/rugby fans

The shape is cut, then sewed along the sides leaving a gap to put the wadding in

These are then joined together
and collars made
The single shape was tested out on  a mannequin to see if other designs were possible:

Woodcroft-Making of a hide

This assignment was to a direct brief which we had to identify and design a specfic need for the wildlife area in Winchmore Hill.

Being a textile designer the obvious solution was to create a hide so that the local community can study the wildlife without disturbing the birds and animals that are around. The picture on the left shows our group from Southgate college at the site with Tony the main organiser of Friends of Woodcroft Wildspace.

To start this project I initially went to the site and did some water colour drawings and some rubbings of the plants in the wildspace. Some of these are shown below:-

Woodcroft-Making of a Hide

Cutting material into strips to be slotted into the netting

Netting showing some of the materials added on

Original material - window net curtain - patterns were heat-transferred. However, the colour was not right

The material is to be fitted on the chair as shown but it needs to be longer. Hence the netting at the top is used.

The chair is adapted with flexible poles to fit the material.

Safe & Excite

For this assignment I wanted to make use of my children's Karate belts. My ideas ranged from a wall hanging, a folding chair,a waistcoat to finally a low cushion or basically a poufe.

For the stuffing I am going to use four pillows plus some old towels.I have also used a plastic sheet on top and bottom to make it waterproof if anything were to spill on it.

In addition the bottom is made of leatheratte so that it withstands the wear and tear of usage.

Initially I wanted to create a image at the bottom using funky foam and glitter so that as well as 'safe' it was 'exciting'- see picture below. The glitter was just coming off and the foam started to break as I also tried to embroider into it.
As you can see its a karate man with the head also acting as a sun and the words karate in japanese.

This picture shows a close up of a section of the above to display the embroidery. You can also see that the glitter is spaced out as it has come off.

Please see the pictures.

Endurance:2D to 3D Mat/Poncho

These pictures are from my 'endurance' assignment where we had to produce a 2-D piece which can be then turned into 3-D.Hence I have produced a mat which can be turned into a poncho.I have used leatheratte which is waterproof combined with velvet. My idea stems from Zeltbhans which were used in world war 11 by Germans. The Zeltbhans were waterproof cloths which can be combined to make tents, raincoats or shelters.
